The name commemorates the British zoologist Philip Lutley Sclater.ĭue to ongoing habitat loss, small population size, limited range and overhunting in some areas for food and its feathers, Sclater's Monal is evaluated as Vulnerable on IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is not known if the Crestless Monal male participates in nest defense but it is likely. The male Himalayan Monal guards the nest and helps rear the chicks. Among the nationally protected bird species of Bhutan, Common Raven (Corvus corax), Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus) and Rufous-necked Hornbill (Aceros nipalensis) are found in the landscape. Their diet typically includes leaves, grasses, herbs, roots, shoots, and twigs. The conservation policies of Bhutan, India, and Nepal, have provided protection to a number of bird species that reside in the KL. The female usually lays between three to five eggs. Himalayan gorals are herbivores (folivores, graminivores). The Himalayan monal is preyed up on by large birds of prey and the snow leopard. This leads to areas in their range which show distinctive signs of feeding. They forage throughout the day and dig extensively with their bills often up to 25cm deep. The diet of the Crestless Monal is like that of other members of the genus Lophophorus, probably consists mainly of tubers, roots, bulbs, arthropods, rodents, seeds and flowers. They feed on seeds, tubers, shoots, berries, insects and their larvae. The males of recently discovered population of Arunachal Pradesh of India has an all white tail. Sclater's Monal is distributed to mountain forests of southeast China, northern Burma and northeast India, at altitudes of 2,500 to 4,200 metres. The crestless female is mostly a dark brown bird with white throat, pale yellow bill and barred below. In the wild, they feed on a variety of insects, seeds, tubers, roots, and berries. The tail is white, with a broad chestnut band. What do Himalayan monals eat Himalayan monals are omnivorous. The Indian Musk Deer is a highly poached animal and it will be a tough trek for you to find this fragrant animal as it likes to stay far from human habitation. It likes to eat just leaves, flowers, and grasses. It has a highly iridescent purplish-green upperparts plumage, short and curly metallic green crown feathers, copper neck, purplish-black throat, white back, blue orbital skin, yellowish-orange bill and brown iris. The Himalaya Musk Deer comes from the family of Moschidae and lives in uneven and forested environments. S2CID 55089271.Sclater's Monal, Lophophorus sclateri also known as the Crestless Monal, is a large, approximately 68cm long, monal of east Himalayas region.
